The Center Fielder

The center fielder covers the middle of the field (when viewing the field from home plate). The range is essential for a center fielder because he has to cover more ground than either of the outfielders on either side of him.

Elite center fielders all have some things in common. They are the team’s fastest person. The center fielder has to catch balls that are hit toward the middle of the outfield, the middle-right and middle-left outfield.

A flyball that the center fielder and one or more of their teammates both try to catch. When this happens, the center fielder has to catch the ball first. To lead the defense, center fielders should call for fly balls that can be caught, then make the catch.

It’s not enough to be a great center fielder if you have a lot of speed. Center fielders must also be able to throw well. The job of a center fielder is to quickly return the ball to the infield to stop runners from taking an extra base after a hit and throw out runners who are at second, third, or home plate.

Center fielders are the first batter in a game now and then. There is a considerable risk for them to score early in the game. They might ask left-handed center fielders to bunt in the game’s first at-bat because these players can get to first base with their speed.
