Introduction To Baseball Positions

It can be confusing for newcomers to baseball to grasp the nuances of the various roles and responsibilities involved.

Like any other confusing issue, if you slow down and break it into parts, all will make sense pretty soon.

Let’s begin with names for each of the nine baseball positions.

  1. Pitcher
  2. Catcher
  3.  First Baseman
  4. Second Baseman
  5. Third Baseman
  6. Shortstop
  7.  Left Fielder
  8.  Center Fielder
  9.  Right Fielder

The 10th position in some baseball games, known as the designated hitter, is also counted. There are no defensive responsibilities for this player.

It’s also worth noting that these positions correspond to those used by scorekeepers to record baseball games.
